May 31, 2011 has been set aside as World No Tobacco Day. The 31st of May each year the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco. The WHO uses this day to be an advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption, specifically through tobacco control messages, and to promote adherence to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is the world’s foremost tobacco control treaty. This treaty, negotiated under the auspices of the WHO, was put in place in 2005 and to date is the most widely embraced treaty in the history of the United Nations. Currently there are 172 parties endorsing this evidence-based treaty that reaffirms the rights of all people to the highest standard of health and provides new legal dimensions for cooperation in tobacco control.
Once again, Mossman Associates’ NicCheck test has been chosen to be the evidence based test used to confirm smoking cessation in a number of Quit and Win contests around the world. Completion of these and the announcements of the contest winners should be in time to celebrate World No Tobacco Day.
“We can think of no better way to celebrate the upcoming event than to continue our support of these types of contests”, quotes Donald Mossman, President of Mossman Associates. He continues, “Competitions in Finland, Canada, and Taiwan should all conclude in time to celebrate this noteworthy day. We look forward to working with other countries, universities and organizations that take on these types of programs”.
